Allen Hori
Visiting Associate Professor
Allen Hori is a graphic designer intrigued with the poetics of graphic design and communication, having worked with a range of clients from various fields of corporate, fashion, music, culture, art and publishing. He received a B.F.A. in photography from the University of Hawaii and an M.F.A. in design from Cranbrook Academy of Art, after which he received a Fulbright Grant to study in The Netherlands. Allen is principal at Bates Hori, New York, a graphic design and visual research studio. His work has earned recognition from New York Type Directors, AIGA, American Center for Design, I.D. Magazine, Emigré, Eye, IDEA, and has appeared in many domestic and foreign exhibitions and publications.
Allen’s process of extensive research and exploration critically balances the relationship of words and images, the fluidity of design and photography as practice and play. He was named an I.D. Top Forty Influential Designer and has lectured widely at design schools and professional symposia.
Allen is currently a critic in the graduate faculty in Graphic Design at Yale University School of Art and was the 2008 Frank Stanton Chair in Graphic Design at The Cooper Union School of Art.
