The workshops are a pre-requisite for students from many departments before registering for academic credit for an internship. The workshops are also filled with valuable information for students who are interested in being an intern.
Monthly, an Internship Workshop is hosted in the Career Services. The goal of this program, which begins at 12:30 PM in East Hall One, is to outline specific information for students regarding departmental internships and interning in New York. It is geared towards students who are ready to register for academic credit for an internship, but can be very valuable for students who have just begun to think about interning.
The main topics of each session are:
1) The internship process and components to applying for an internship
2) Making an appointment with a career counselor to:
- Research an internship opportunity
- Contact information for Internship Faculty members in each department
- Gain internship access in PrattPro (database of job, internship and volunteer opportunities)
- Preparing for an interview (resume, cover letter, portfolio development)
- Contracts (students may be asked to sign various contracts for internship participation)
- How to navigate internships for credit through specific departments
- Legal issues and internships
- Curricular Practical Training (off-campus employment for International Students)
- Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Federal Labor Laws surrounding internships
- Obtaining a Learning Contract, what they are for and why they are important
