Rachel Digerness is an independent designer working in motion, digital media and print design. She particularly loves motion design because she sees it as the visual choreography of image, type and sound—merging the digital and physical. She is passionate about communication and is always looking for ways to share meaningful stories, whether abstract or literal.
With her unconventional background in business and engineering, she is able to merge her passions for creativity, problem-solving, communication and technology through design. She is a graduate of the Systems Engineering Department at the University of Virginia and worked as a business consultant and project manager for many years. She is currently completing a graduate degree in Communications Design at Pratt Institute.
In addition to engorging herself with music of all kinds, she wishes she owned a grand piano and had more time to spend getting to know people. Her maiden name (Yoo) proudly lives on in her love for visual design and media, while working out of her studio in New York.
This thesis argues that through design, digitally immersive space prioritizes interactive social experiences. Technology demands our focus, distracting us from our natural environment where we fulfill our fundamentally human and relational needs. However, as designers, we can mediate the quality of social interactions to achieve unity in our dualistic contemporary life. Blurring the boundary of digital and physical realities through user interaction unifies the physical and digital states.
