Hoon Kim is a graphic designer and an educator. He established Why Not Smile, an independent graphic design workshop based in New York City, focusing on design for art, architecture and cultural clients across various media. Why Not Smile has earned recognition from various organizations such as AIGA Best 50 Books(US), Brno Graphic Design Biennial(CZ), Chaumont Poster and Graphic Design(FR), Print Annual(US) and TDC Typographic Excellence(US).
Prior to forming Why Not Smile, a founder Hoon Kim has worked for the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Practise, Samsung Design Membership, Crosspoint, spanning New York, London, and Seoul since 2000. Hoon has taught at Harvard University, Pratt Institute and RISD and given lectures Royal College of Art in London, Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem, MassArt in Boston, and various schools internationally. He has been awarded as The Design Leader by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of Korea and the Korea Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP).
Hoon teaches in both the MFA and MS Communications Design programs.
