Ex Libris
EX LIBRIS is a hybrid library and exhibition space. Created by and for Pratt GradComD students, it is an evolving, versatile and collaborative project. EX LIBRIS is Latin for "from the library of." The current book collection, Begin Anywhere, marks the first of what we hope will become many biannual student-curated exhibitions, selected from our own libraries and the libraries of others.
Find out more information about the books we've chosen, and the project, here–http://exlibris.prattgradcomd.com–or come visit the space itself! And, most importantly: come celebrate the first of what we hope will be many library/exhibitions in our studio tomorrow evening, from 7–8PM.

Public Project: Design Advocacy & GradComD
By Josh Eriksen, GradComD student
In 1964, and then again in 2000, groups of designers formed a collective voice in manifestoes titled First Things First.
The manifestoes stated that there are more worthy pursuits for design outside of the commercial applications it is typically relegated to and called for a priority shift in "favor of more useful, lasting, and democratic forms of communication." These manifestoes presented a dialogue that design should be used to create visual discourses that provide an altruistic benefit to society. These sentiments have since transcended and are now part of a larger ideology, and pedagogy, known as design advocacy.

GradComD Students Find a Wealth of Experiences in Copenhagen
It is common for students of the fine arts to spend time abroad studying the works of great artists, but where can design students go for a similar cultural immersion? Four Pratt GradComD students discovered this past summer the answer is Copenhagen, Denmark. Scandinavian design delivers a renowned modern aesthetic across all design facets and their utilitarian design approach makes the region a great place to take on further design studies.
The Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) and Pratt GradComD offer a nine-credit summer program in graphic design. The program immerses students into an academic and cultural experience that exposes them to many facets of design—architecture, furniture and graphic design—not just their chosen focus. As with most experiences, it’s the journey that defines the time, not the destination itself, and this creative journey is no exception.

Cash Money: 2011 AIGA Design Salary Guide
Last month, AIGA released their comprehensive design salary survey. The salary figures aren’t ugly, but the salary trends describe a frustrating design job market.
Design salaries have remained flat for the past several years, yet design firms are reporting they are as busy as ever. The thought here is they haven't replaced designers who were let go during the recession. Also, where in-house design departments would once hire internal designers, they now outsource a significant amount of their work to minimize employee costs. Combined, the abundance of freelance and contract employees have kept salary levels in check.

Swimming Upstream in the Fishbowl
Pratt GradComD instructor Katya Moorman's interactive exhibit Swimming Upstream in the Fishbowl to be on display at SB D Gallery.
Three years ago, SB D Gallery curated and directed the first exhibition that stopped the life of Twin Towers as of September 10th, 2001, in effort to heal from the wound by bringing back the happy memories of Twin Towers before the terror.
As a closure, Pre911:Twin Towers Once Stood will have the finale this year marching with a decade of struggles and will present stories and messages in various mediums: photographs, drawings, paintings, poems, sculptures, and mixed media.
